So the main difference is that that detection is not dice/luck based. In order to get spotted you have to actually be seen by a patrol / sentry. Patrols follow either black or white “patrol lines” (these move on alternate turns to minimise housekeeping). Sentries stand on white or black “sentry points”. Each turn the event card indicates which, if any, of the sentries or patrols change their facing.
Unlike V commandos enemy units do not spawn onto the map during the “stealth” phase of the game, so the patrol / sentry layout is set at the beginning of the mission (much like the commandos PC game). Each mission has a stealth score (multiple actually for scaling difficulty), actions the heroes carry out (using noisy weapons, corpses being spotted etc) advance the stealth tracker until eventually the alarm will sound, triggering the “battle” phase, at which point the game is much more of an open firefight with enemy squads and vehicles pouring into the map to annihilate you.
The stealth portion of the game (which is around 85% of gameplay) looks and feels very close to the commandos pc game (hiding in a bush, jumping out and slitting a guard’s throat then hiding the body before someone else sees it etc.). With the battle phase feeling like a realistic firefight (if you are dug in and prepared you can last a while, out in the open you’re immediately killed).
There is some luck to the game in that the patrol changes etc are on a card draw but careful, strategic play negates that. There are also dice rolls for shooting at and being shot, but again, there are lots of ways to mitigate or stack the odds in your favour with careful planning.
