Hey guys! 2020 keeps on giving, but we’re soldiering on. Parts of this Update have been written for quite some time, as I couldn’t wait to share them with you! This is going to be one of those large updates, so I’ll get straight to business!
Timeline and Production Update
There’s no other way to put it, we’re going to have a delay, most likely Q3. There are two main reasons for this delay: testing and COVID. We’re working around the clock to test the game, both the Battles and the Voyage Phase, with different player configurations, but the sheer amount of card effect and gameplay situation combinations is staggering. We want this game to be a benchmark release, both in quantity and quality of content, so I would rather take some more time testing the more involved and complex mechanics of the later cycles than release something that would require an extensive balancing errata. There is a substantial silver lining to this, see the next paragraph!
The other, not so fun reason, is the COVID pandemic. The global situation is rapidly changing, with country after country announcing lockdown measures. It’s hard to predict what the next 3 months will bring, but I wouldn’t want to ride the team to meet a deadline, just to be told we have unrelated shipping or production delays. I’d rather spend that time actively working on the game.
The COVID pandemic has also hit close to home. Each day Poland is breaking infection rate records, with more than 27 thousand recorded cases TODAY ONLY. This is one of the highest infection rates in the world. We’re quickly running out of hospital beds and we’re entering a semi-lockdown on Saturday, though a full lockdown later in the month is all but assured.
With Mateusz already going through COVID and 2 COVID scares last month (with employees going on short quarantines before tests), for the past two and a half weeks we’ve been working on moving all work online and relegating everything to home office for the foreseeable future. We were one week late: one of our office employees has already tested positive. The whole team is now awaiting testing or on self-quarantine. Sadly, I seem to be developing symptoms, so I am most likely already infected. I’m stable, so I will continue to work and hopefully my state won’t deteriorate further.
Now, to the overwhelmingly good news.
ABS claws FTW!
Ulissea in her plastic glory.
We are progressing on all fronts. We already had some production samples made more than a month ago, while we’re also doing production testing on every mini, including Cycle IV and V. Below you’ll find samples of both, the production sample, as well as testing samples (these are made with really soft plastic and without ABS, so disregard any defects, these are just for figuring out things like mass distribution, breaking minis into parts and so on).
As mentioned, we have also been busy with moving all work online, which for you means more TTS Updates and Beta Tests!
Bucket of Goodness
Babelian Lunacy - here lies madness (in putting it together!)
Pssst! Did you know the Dawnburner has the Glide and Paradox Paragon abilities?
TTS Update
Some of you may have noticed we made a substantial update to the TTS mod late last month. This included both the new UI, new symbols, new art and gameplay tweaks. We will be making another free Update soon, bringing all other card types up to date, both mechanically and UI-wise, and maybe even adding some game content.
This is just talking about the public side of the TTS Mod. Under the hood, we will be implementing most of the gameplay, including all the Battles. As a lot of you offered help in testing the game — and there is no substitute for wide-spread blind tests — we will be offering just that!
Beta Tests
Before the end of November we will be offering an invitation to select gaming groups to participate in the first round of closed Beta Tests. As the game is HUGE, each group will most likely receive a different part of the game, different Primordial, Level, Titan, Gear and Mnemos combinations. You will have a chance to fight a beefed up version of the Hekaton, as well as the cruel Pursuer or the Despair-inducing Temenos. You will taste the combo mechanics of both Cyclonus and the Nietzschean, as well as see the full extent of the Vantage Point system through Primordials such as the Chimera. You will have access to Summonings, Awakenings and Evolving Weapons. There is a lot to play with here (and test, obviously!).
We don’t want these tests to be some uber-exclusive affair either. Over time, we’d like to extend the invitation to more and more groups across the world.
Card Count
Over the past couple of weeks you’ve been asking about the card sizes and counts of AT:O. I gave a short answer on this topic in the comments and on BGG, but for those who might have missed it, here it is!
Core Game
Mini-American: 831+
Poker (MTG size): 749+
Square (70mm x 70mm): 255+
Tarot: 59+
Non-standard (more like Player Mats really): 25+
Total: 1919
The highest variance can come in the Mini-American format, as we’re balancing some Gear cards by making more or less copies of them. We’re also making some mechanics decisions that may influence the card count, like making some cards double-sided (Fear and Dread are now double sided, as one tends to transform into the other, Knockdown is now double-sided to make the exact timing of actions clear). Finally, as the Exploration decks escalate (we couldn’t help ourselves, everything escalates!), we’re also balancing the number of those ‘escalated’ Explo cards to make for a steady difficulty curve across each campaign.
Expansions
It’s harder to estimate, but judging by the the Core Game and Expansion Cycles being at least as big as the Core ones, it’s safe to say Cycle IV and Cycle V will have around 1/3 of the Core Box EACH.
Expansion Cycles One Big Box
Both Expansions, one big box. This is something we’ve been thinking about almost as long as the PM has been opened. Only a handful of you order just one Expansion, with 99% going in for both, so we started thinking. Doing one box has a lot of advantages.
Doing one big box would allow us to better mix the content of both Cycles, making more interesting campaign starting setups, as well as some hybrid content (things we’re doing for Cycles I-III) and more content in general. One big box would allow us to more freely reference the mechanics and story between Cycles. One big box would sit better with the Core Game Box and allow us to optimize the space for Expansion storage (both minis and sleeved cards).
This is something exciting that we’d like to do, but we also wanted to hear from you first. There is a tangible incentive for you here: the Shadowdancer
New Titan: Shadowdancer
Shadowdancer
Shadowdancer is a new Titan we’d like to introduce to Expansion Big Box release. It’s a late Cycle IV Titan that transitions well into Cycle V. As you know, each Primordial has a Titan tied to it and the Adversaries are no exception. The Dahaka already has one, the Immortal Truthbearer. It’s a great design and ties well into the story, but we always felt there was more to explore here. That’s how the Shadowdancer was conceived: if the Immortal Truthbearer is a way for the Argonauts to match the Dahaka, the Shadowdancer is a way to exceed it.
The Shadowdancer, just like the Dahaka itself, is partially made from ambrosia vapors and shadows, being able to freely move between the physical and ethereal planes.
The Shadowdancer, as well as new Gear items, like the Stilletto Swords and the Dahakandys (the cloak), would be part of the Big Box. Convinced yet?
And the mini
Mnestis Theatre Extension
And how did YOU imagine the Mnestis Theatre?
This is something for the far future, but we wanted to let you know where the game (and metagame) of AT:O is headed. Mnestis Theatre is already brimming with content. With new high Primordial levels and unique rewards, like Ascending materials, legendary Gear, Gear variants and story secrets, it’s feature complete.
I was thinking. However long a Cycle will take you to beat, you will beat it eventually. You may repeat each Cycle several times, as you won’t see all of the Game and Story content (there’s a slight legacy element here too), but there may be a point when you still want more: and the place for you will be the Mnestis Theatre. I’d like to make the Mnestis Theatre a natural extension of the game, even post-game. To that end, I would like to create exclusive Story Content for the Mnestis Theatre, as another incentive to play it and to keep you entertained until the next chapter of the Aeon Trespass world…
So, to clarify and sum up: we’re not currently working on it. It won’t delay the release of the Core Game and Expansions. It will most likely end up as a free release for everyone who owns a copy of the game!
UI Design: Symbols
Over the last few Updates we’ve continued to drip the new look and design of the UI. But the symbols are brand new too! More distinct and easier to read — good thing, as there’s more than 100 of these! Take a look at the redesigned BP response symbols, as well as the sleek new Triskelion stats. Oh, and there’s some semi-spoilery symbols here too!
“You hide behind your metal walls and in the bodies of the Titans you so recklessly throw against the Fates. For it is not your lives you gamble, but theirs. You have simply forgotten the primal fear of death. Let me reacquaint you.”
The Nietzschean, First Lesson
The God
The Nietzschean opens Cycle II with a bang and doesn’t let up until the end. He’s an enemy unlike any you’ve faced before. Stronger, more brutal, more cunning and with a sinister agenda. He will test you both physically and mentally, both on the Battlefield and outside of it. Pray he does not find you lacking.
This time let’s focus on his combat prowess and tactics. Just like Cyclonus, the Nietzschean is a skilled warrior, which translates to his ability to follow up an AI card attack with another AI attack. Unlike the Cyclonus however, his Combo Limit is directly tied to the Wounds he has received, making him more dangerous the closer he gets to being defeated (you don’t have to worry about that, though, first try to land one Wound and see how it goes…). He’s also Lumbering, which means you cannot Push or Pull him and has a Displacement value of 10, meaning he can knock you back like a baseball bat.
Lana!!!
Maybe the most frightening part of the Danger Zone trait is the, well, Danger Zone itself. The zone will be depicted on the Primordial Sheet and extends to tiles adjacent to the sides of the Nietzschean. Each time a Titan tries to launch a flank attack or just sneak around to the back, the Nietzschean knows. And most likely will punish you for it with an immediate Signature attack. You’d best face him head on or go all the way around (wasting precious moves)… but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures!
Domain AI Attack
Domain is one of the deadliest types of attacks, a targeted zone attack. This almost always guarantees he’ll hit at least one Titan, though many will be caught in the wide arc of the black sword. The attack has escalating damage, so using a shield to mitigate one of the hits will pay dividends. However! The attack also deals an Ambrosia token. Gain too many of these and you will die outright, regardless of your Danger level or armor!
After the attack, the Nietzschean resets to the center of the Board and then, unless you can counter, he combos!
Dawn of Dust
You thought the Domain zone was big? Check the Dawn of Dust. The Nietzschean taps his sword on the ground, raising clouds of ashen dust across the battlefield. This deals Ambrosia tokens as well as negative Precision tokens. And deals Danger too. And combos with everything…
Chomp!
The Nietzschean reveals the true nature of his Cowl of Fire, Smoke and Ash and takes a big bite. This attack has it all. It targets the cowards who would sneak up on the Nietzschean or those who’ve dared draw blood from him. It deals Ambrosia, it exhausts all your Gear, making your armor useless, and then, well… On the best of days you will draw an Obol. On a 6+ Fate, you’ll just die. And if you somehow survive, you’ll be tossed across the battlefield like a gnawed bone! You will also gain 1 Rage and you might think it a good thing; think again…
Bad Hair Day
“Countless have challenged the Nietzschean and lost. Their faces glare at you. Will yours join them?”
I had so much fun designing the Nietzschean, as there is so much flavor to draw upon! Oh, and three model iterations. Spoilers: each version of the Nietzschean miniature is canon! The Faces of Defeat can be seen on the back of the latest version. It’s a tough BP to wound, at AT 8, and the Fail response is particularly nasty, while the Wound response is not particularly helpful either. But the Crit! Oh the Crit, the Crit grants both your Argonaut and your Titan a permanent stat increase!
You’ve got something on your back…
I love this BP card. You see, the Nietzschean consumes swords. He’s eaten the legendary Seven Swords of the Leleges and he hungers for more. If you fail at wounding this BP card, your Weapon will be taken from you. The Nietzschean despises all weapons that are not swords, so he will spit them out: lucky for you, as you will be able to retrieve the weapon after the Battle. If it’s a Sword or Slabsword however… he’ll take it permanently! Unique or not, it will be consumed and lost forever!
Well, not forever. Look at the Crit response: your valiant Titan reaches deep into the abyss-laden body of the Nietzschean and retrieves a unique sword! The Necrosword (sometimes called the Necroxiphos), a nasty shape-changing sword made of living ambrosia, or any other sword you once had and lost! This is actually a great way to gain something like Gigan, Gigas, Bronzedge or Theseus Razor in Cycle II without venturing into the Mnestis Theatre or Ascending your old Gear.
Design: Terrain Tiles
Argo tile
The Nietzschean knows how to choose a battlefield. Yes, that’s correct, sometimes you will fight beside the very Argo you are sworn to protect! The Argo terrain grants boosts to attacks in a 3-space-wide Support Zone, but if your Titan or the Primordial collides with it, it may lead to direct Hull damage! And remember, you may lose a Battle and continue the campaign. But drop down to 0 Hull and your Odyssey ends there…
This tile (there’ll be 3 in total, converting one Board Edge into the edge of the Argo) is also a great highlight of the new way we’re designing tiles and the Cycle II color scheme. Want to see more tiles? Have a look:
Spartan River Works tile
Damaged Krypteia Outpost tile
“The whole Nietzschean Empire descends upon us, swords alone may not be enough.”
“I’ve seen some ancient designs in the Last Tome…”
Argonaut & Arystobanes
The Gun
Notice the Titans. Then notice the humans.
The challenges of the second Cycle will be overwhelming and the Primordials that much more powerful. You’ll need heavy support. You’ll need a gun. The 13th Muse Grand Cannon to be exact! The Grand Cannon is an Argo Ability, but one so awesome and so grand (it’s in the name), that it will have a full art illustration and an over-sized card to boot!
You’ll take the Grand Cannon as one of your Argo Abilities and may shoot it during Battle. Once — so make it count! You may be looking at the card and wondering “ok, I know how to shoot it, but what does it do?” Well, that’s the fun part. Before the Battle, you’ll create a charge from available resources. The charge can be created using any resources from Cycle I or Cycle II, mortal, primordial or divine! And you know what? Depending on the resources used, the shot will have different effects!
Want to soften up the Primordial? Use an Ambrosia Round that leaves tons of Opening and Break tokens. Want something that hits harder? Load up a Bone Bolt made from any Primordial resources you have to spare and get a -1 AT modifier for the whole Round.
Still not enough? Use a Temenos Fragmentation Round and cripple the Primordial for the whole Battle! Use a Chimeric Pellet and instantly create a Vantage Point! Or load up a rare Primordial Core or a Sisyphus Tear and… well, I’ll not spoil the surprise! With more than a dozen unique rounds, the 13th Muse Grand Cannon will see a lot of use on the battlefield.
The Seven Swords of the Leleges
Leleges, the Spartans before the dawn of Spartans. Aeon Trespass: Odyssey is laden with ancient history and layers upon layers of bones of civilizations that came and went before the Eschaton Age. Almost nothing is known about the Leleges, who or what they were. Only their swords remained, hinting perhaps at a long-kept secret. Why are the Leleges swords so large? Were they wielded by Giants, Cyclopes? Or Titans? The Cyclopes from the mountains may have known more, but they are all but extinct thanks to the Nietzschean.
With names like Necroxiphos, the Red Polis, The End or Immeasurable Weight, these swords will not disappoint. Their abilities are wild and introduce completely new playstyles. With the Red Polis you start with the Berserk Kratos card and gain power with every Wound you deal, while the Necroxiphos transforms into… ah. The only problem is: the Nietzschean ate them. Are you human enough to retrieve them?
Sneak Peak: New minis!
This may be the longest Update yet, let’s make it even longer! Here are two new miniatures to whet your appetite and give you hints at what is to come!
Wishender on a Cirrotrireme, Monet
This is a variant Wishender miniature, “Wishender on a Cirrotrireme”. The miniature itself is not part of any official Expansion or set (yet!), but it does show something that will happen in Cycle IV. And you will get a Cirrotrireme, you’ll need every help you can get to scale that monstrous Babelian Lunacy!
“And Herakles wept: I may have strained the Fates too far…”
