Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread - par Far Off Games - livraison juin 2023

Update #51 - August Update: Shipping, Threat/Combo Track, Rulebook and Back of the Box

Hey Backers! I hope this update finds you well! It’s a beautiful rainy summer day here in Oregon! Ever since the wildfires here a few years ago, I start feeling nervous if we go for long stretches without rain, so hearing the sound of rain softly falling and sipping a cup of tea while I type this to you feels especially cozy! Cozy Cody. Ok, let us enjoy the delicious updates!

Shipping / Tax Update

In our last update, we anticipated the shipping/tax charges would be going live ‹ very soon, › and I apologize that did not materialize! David has been putting in the hours, coordinating with our fulfillment/logistics team, and building out the comprehensive shipping model into Gamefound. But it’s long and tedious work, and he must enter all the variables by hand, and then double check everything!

I’m pleased to say that all the line-by-line entries are done, and now we’re awaiting the go-ahead from our European VAT consultant to ensure that everything is in compliance. Once that’s done, everyone will be able to finalize your pledges with shipping / taxes.

We were hoping to have it go live today, but c’est la vie (such is life). We will post another short update as soon as it’s live!

Reminder: We will keep the pledge manager open for 2 months once the shipping / taxes are live, so you should have plenty of time to finalize your pledge!

Threat / Combo Track

In our Kickstarter campaign we unlocked this stretch goal:

The Threat/Combo track is used during combat to track the current amount of enemy Threat and player Combo. The design of this component is really important because it’s something you have your hands on quite a bit (once or twice a turn usually), so I really want this to be a good experience for you!

I enjoyed getting to work toward the final design this month. We’ve mainly been playtesting on our computers in Tabletop Simulator (TTS), so it was nice to take a break from the screen and design a physical component! The design goals for this dual layer component are that it’s easy to use and provides some safety against bumping. If it gets accidentally nudged, we don’t want you to lose track of the Threat and Combo.

Here were the two initial design ideas:

When we playtested with them, two issues became apparent: the top one (A), with the separate boxes, keeps things from getting moved if you bump the tracker, but it’s annoying to play with. You have to pick up the cubes each time you need to move them.

The second design (B) was easier to use. You can slide the cubes through the ‹ gates, › so it’s easier to adjust Threat and Combo. But, the gates would cause issues with cubes getting stuck on gates, or stuck in front of each other. It also didn’t do as well on a ‹ bump › test, and you could lose track of where you were more often.

To fix this, I tried a design (not pictured) where I widened the gates, but then it would completely fail the bump test the majority of the time, which didn’t meet the design goals!

So, I discussed this with our playtesters, and they had lots of good ideas. I came back with these two designs:

Everyone agreed design (C) was superior, so I built a rough prototype of it to see how it worked:

(rough hand-made prototype)

Success! This design worked great, and met all the design goals! You can easily track Threat and Combo by sliding the cubes in the tracks, without needing to pick them up. For the bump test, it performs really well. The tracks are narrow enough that anything but a direct horizontal bump keeps the cubes in-line. I’m very pleased!

Rulebook Update

The majority of my work this month (and this is what I’ll go back to doing as soon as this update is completed) has been on the final version of the rulebook! In our Wave 1 and Wave 2 playtesting, we’d been using a Google Doc. Playtesters could make direct comments and give feedback on the rulebook, and it was quick and easy for us to make edits. We’d been using ‹ rough and ready › images of prototype components and TTS screenshots.

Now, I’m working through formatting, typesetting, and creating the final graphics for the rulebook to make everything beautiful, as well as functional. By necessity, we have to wait until all the other components are in their final form before we can finalize the rulebook, so that all of our graphics are up-to-date. As soon as we have our first ‹ final draft › ready, I’ll share the PDF with you all, so that you can look it over. For now, here’s a peek:

Rulebook, Setup spread (not quite final)

Back of the Box

One thing that always brings me joy is doing up the back of the box for games. It really makes me feel like the finish line is in sight! Here’s a peek at the current version:

Back of the box, (not quite final)

It’s not fully finalized yet, and I still need to tweak a few things, but I’m so excited to be at this stage of the project!

Conclusion

That’s all I’ve got for you today! Sorry the update is so short. I’m going to get back to finalizing the rulebook! Thanks for hanging out with me, and I’ll see you soon!

Shipping / Taxes

In the next 48 hours, you should get an email from Gamefound. When you receive it, the shipping and taxes will be live! You will be able to see the actual pricing and finalize your pledges.

David has been hard at work getting everything ready, manually inputting all of the shipping quotes from our fulfilment partners - a huge thanks to him for all his hard work on this!

Since our initial estimate in 2021, most prices have gone up slightly. We’ve done our best to get the cheapest prices we can for every region! If you would like a refund as a result of this increase, please let us know and we’ll process it, no questions asked.

Finally, note that the prices you see are after we’ve already applied our $20 freight subsidy to all the shipping prices! The price you see is what you would need to pay.

With the final shipping and taxes going live, you have two months to finalize your pledges! After those two months, we will be closing the pledge manager. The closing date is November 13, 2023.
