« Greetings, brave heroes of Daren!

We heard your voices asking for gameplay news and so here we are bringing our second show and tell. This time on the great hero, Maya, and, of course, the Hero Trayz.

The first thing you might notice by the image below, is that it is about Maya’s hero board V2. It’s smaller than the V1. As you might have noticed as well, the main board only holds the heroes’ basic skills. All other content like: starting gear and further hero skills, will come in separate cards.

The second thing you might notice is that the hero board, the gear cards, the skill cards, the familiar cards and the action cubes are beautifully set up and arranged on a Hero Tray.

The Hero Trayz have specific spaces for everything you might need while playing. Which also makes the bumps on the table less catastrophic. Just try to imagine all components getting mixed when someone kicks the table out of emotion. Nightmare, right? That probably will not happen if you have these bad boys on your side.

Now, going back to Maya,

Résumé

you can see, on top of her board, her health points. The red « 10 » marks her maximum health at the beginning of an adventure, if she doesn’t have any kind of bonus. Also, can you see the red arrow pointing to « 7 » on her health bar? That’s the Hero Tray health point marker. Don’t have to worry about your marker flying or rolling off of it’s position when slamming the table!

On top of that, half standing, are Maya’s familiars! An eagle and a wolf. Those two slots can be used when also storing cards that you won’t be using like skills not yet unlocked, if you don’t wanna mix them. You can also probably notice two numbers on those cards: a grey one and a red one. Now the grey one tells you how many spaces that specific familiar can walk (or fly) on their turn. The kind of movement is also written there, right next to the number.

The red number, on the other hand, tells you how much damage those familiars can cause to the enemies. And also next to the amount of damage, there are further explanations on the kind of attack. The eagle, for example, when attacking, lets adjacent heroes recover 1 action cube. The wolf attack, instead, causes 1 bleed damage. It would really depend on your game style, either aiming for control or more damage.

The yellow symbol on the top right side of the card tells you that both those familiar are melee attackers.

Now on the right side of the Hero Tray, you can see 4 cards. The top 2 cards are Maya’s starting gear: a Wooden Crossbow and Leather Armor. The Wooden Crossbow card has a d20 symbol, with a blue « 11 » under it. What that means is that when playing with Maya, and using a regular attack like « Critical Shot » (top red skill on Maya’s board), which stats are: « +0 HIT; CRIT: 15+ », you’ll need to roll at least an 11 to hit your target. Anything less than that is a miss. So, that means that 11 is the base hit rate for that weapon, the Wooden Crossbow.

On the bottom of the card, on the right side, you can see a red number « 2 ». Now you might remember the red numbers from the familiar cards. That means exactly the same thing. The Wooden Crossbow deals a base of 2 points of damage on attack. Taking « Critical Shot » as an example again, rolling at least 11 on the d20, would deal 2 points of damage on the target. If you roll at least a 15, than make that 4 points of damage on a critical hit!

On the top right corner of the card, you may see an arrow on a target symbol. What that means is that the Wooden Crossbow is, as you might have guessed, a ranged weapon. The specific range is written right under the difficulty level to hit with the crossbow, the blue « 11 »; and that’s range 1. That means that if Maya is equipped with the Wooden Crossbow, her ranged (red) attacks, can hit a target that is 1 space away from her.

The Leather Armor card, as you can see, is a little different. It doesn’t have a damage number, nor a difficulty to use. Neither does it have range. But it has 4 colored squares, on the color of the action cubes that every hero has. These squares are marked by a white lightning symbol. What that means is that the Leather Armor, when equipped, gives you a reaction skill that can be used allocating any color action cube to the armor card. That skill, on Maya’s starting gear is « Prevent 1 DMG and Move 2 » as is written under the 4 colored squares. That means that, when Maya is being attacked for 2 points of damage, for example, the player can allocate a blue, red, yellow, or green cube on the armor, to prevent 1 point of damage from the 2 being taken, and also move 2 spaces, OUT OF THEIR TURN, to relocate and probably prepare a counter attack. Or just avoid any more danger. It’s important to remember that only ONE cube might be allocated on the Leather Armor at a time. Other armors might have it different. Who knows?

The 2 bottom cards on the right side, are just place holders. But they show the other 2 slots the hero has to equip 1 armor and 1 trinket. The armor being the cards with that chest-piece symbol you can seek on the bottom left corner of the Leather Armor.

Still on the items and equipment department, at the bottom of the Hero Tray, you can see two cards under the hero board. Those two spaces are the bag storage, which you may guess, can store up to 2 items. A hero can’t carry more than that.

Moving to the left side of the the hero tray, you can see 4 more cards lined up. Those on the image are just place holders. But that is the place where all the hero skills you unlock during the game will be placed. Each card hold 2 skills. And they match the ones beside them on the hero board. Yellow, melee skills; red, ranged skills; green, agility skills; blue, wisdom skills. Right next to each card, on the Hero Tray, you can also see two spaces occupied by green cubes. Those are the places where you’ll actually allocate the cubes when using a Hero Tray. Instead of on top of the cards, so that you may slam the table a little bit in peace.

Now let us dive a little bit on Maya’s basic skills. From the top down, on the melee, yellow department we have: « Bear Trap » and « Battle Focus ». Battle Focus is a basic skill that every hero has and it’s fairly simple. Allocate a yellow cube and get 1 Focus token. These tokens can be spent to activate one of the two focus abilities available for every hero. More on that later. « Bear Trap », on the other hand, is a quite unique skill. Allocating a yellow cube on that skill, lets the player put a trap token on the board. That token, when triggered by an enemy, will cause 1 DMG and STUN, as described on the skill. Please pay attention as it is not « +1 DMG », but rather « 1 DMG ». That means that the « Bear Trap » skill doesn’t use a basic attack to calculate DMG. It’s always 1 DMG, unless any other skill or equipment say otherwise. And « STUN ». An enemy affected by STUN can only either MOVE or ATTACK (if it is in range to do so) during it’s activation. Use that to your advantage!

On the ranged, red skills department, we have: « Critical Shot », which I briefly explained before, and « Double Arrow ». Now on « Double Arrow » we can read: +0 HIT/+0 HIT. Whenever you find that kind of explanation, it basically means that said skill is made of 2 attacks. In this case, both with a bonus of 0 to hit the target. That means that if that skill is used with Wooden Crossbow equipped, the result on the d20 must be at least 11 to count as hit. If instead of +0 HIT, it had a +1 HIT, then again, with the Wooden Crossbow, a result of at least 10 on the d20 would be enough for a successful hit. Double Arrow will cause the base damage of the weapon equipped. In the case of the Wooden Crossbow, 2 DMG/2 DMG. Each of the attacks must be rolled. One result only applies to one attack of the skill. Right next to both skills, you can see a crossed swords icon. What that icon means in AoD is that said skill needs at least one d20 roll to hit.

On the green, agility skills department, we have « Evasion » and « Shoot 'n Move » skills. « Evasion » as the name and the description (Dodge) say, lets Maya completely avoid a hit skill. Hit skills are marked with a explosion symbol or a crossed swords symbol. Some skills might not be dodged! Now, next to the « Evasion » skill, we can see 2 symbols. One is a lightning symbol, which we already know what it means, right? Remember that Leather Armor? That’s right. « Evasion » is a reaction skill, and as such, might be used only when being targeted by an enemy attack. The other symbol, is a crossed cube. That symbol means that, in order to use « Evasion », the player have to not only allocate a green cube on the « Evasion » skill, but also discard another action cube. With great power comes great responsibility. Completely avoiding an attack means also avoiding all of it’s conditions. That can sometimes be the difference between living and succumbing to the Darkness! « Shoot 'n Move » is the other agility skill that Maya has available at the beginning of a game. It’s description is « 1 DMG: 2 TARGETS; MOVE 3 ». And right next to it, we can see a little explosion symbol. That symbol means that this skill is always a hit. No need to roll a dice for it. Once you use it, the effects are guaranteed, unless another condition prevents you. « Shoot 'n Move » always causes 1 DMG, unless it is prevented, in TWO targets, not only one. Each of the targets chosen, will suffer 1 point of DMG. Last, but not least, « Shoot 'n Move », lets Maya (obviously) move 3 spaces. The order is not relevant. You may move 3 spaces and than cause the damage or cause the damage and than move the 3 spaces.

The last skills are the blue, or wisdom skills. In Maya’s case, those skills let her summon her familiars: Eagle and Wolf. Allocating a blue cube on either one, will let Maya put the familiar miniature on the board, right next to hear, and also, place the familiar card right next to her card on the initiative trail. The familiar always acts after Maya. And their attacks are always a hit! Beware though as they are fragile. Any damage may kill them.

Now, remember that Focus token that Maya can get when using her « Battle Focus » skill? These token can be spent to activate the Focus skills. Those are the purple skills right under Maya’s picture. Focus skills don’t need action cubes to be activated. You just need to spent the necessary amount of Focus tokens. For « Adrenaline Shot », it would be 2 Focus tokens, while for « Fury Arrows », it would be 3. Note that both have a crossed swords icon, which means that at least a d20 roll is necessary.

« Adrenaline Shot » lets Maya make 3 attacks, as the description says: « +0 HIT/+0 HIT/+0 HIT ». Each of these attacks need a successful d20 roll against equipped weapon difficulty. But also, each one can be a critical hit, when rolling 20, and therefore causing double damage. That’s very powerful. Also, each attack can be performed on a different target, as long as they are in Maya’s range.

« Fury Arrows » lets Maya make less attacks, only two of them. On the other hand, it gives a DMG boost to each one of them. Let’s take a look at the description: « +0 HIT/+0 HIT, +2 DMG ». That means that Maya should roll the d20 twice. Each time for a different attack with no bonus whatsoever to hit her enemies. But for each attack hit, she gets +2 DMG. Which means that with the Wooden Crossbow, which base DMG is 2, Maya would cause 4 damage for each successful hit. AND 8 DMG for each critical hit!! Be mindful when using each one of them, as they might benefit you in different situations.

We guess that pretty much covers Maya basic skills and gear, while also showing you how the Hero Trayz can enhance your gameplay experience. We haven’t showed you the Class Skills, nor the Dungeon Roles, but we’ll get to that in the future. This is already a lot of information to take in, and we don’t want you guys tired.

We’ll be ready to answer to all your questions on this subject, and we know you might have many. So fire them away. And again: we don’t expect only this much information to satisfy you, nor should it. But rest assured that we are preparing a big update in the « gameplay department ». Please be a little more patient. You won’t regret it.

By the way, if you liked the Hero Trayz and haven’t asked for yours yet, run to the Pledge Manager while there’s still time and Trayz left!

Please remember to stay in, stay safe and keep fighting the Darkness!

Sincerely,

Team CGS »

Oulala, mon pauvre !

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wearecgs/chronicles-of-drunagor-age-of-darkness/posts/2690797
