This hunter may not have the armour of the charge blade hunter or the damage of the switch axe hunter, but what they do have are Kinsects.

That’s right! Just like in the video game, the insect glaive hunter is accompanied by their reliable Kinsects, whose extract-harvesting abilities can have a powerful effect on your attacks.

Here’s how they work…

Special Rules Card

While you’re landing graceful, sweeping strikes, your Kinsects are darting in to harvest extracts from the monster.

Extracts that can give you more damage, more movement, and faster stamina recovery.

MHW-Blog-15-Insect-Glaive-Special-Rules

Your Kinsects are represented as three extra cards, shuffled and placed in a row above your stamina board. Each one represents a different Kinsect: white, orange, and red.

MHW-Blog-15-Insect-Glaive-Kinsect-Cards

Every time you take a turn, you’ll flip the leftmost face down Kinsect card face up.

While it’s face up, any attacks you play that have a matching Kinsect symbol will gain the effects of that card.

On your next turn, you’ll flip the next leftmost face down Kinsect card face up, and so on, until you’re reaping the benefits of all three Kinsects at the same time.

Once you’ve finished a turn with all three Kinsect cards face up, they’re shuffled and laid face down again. On your next turn, the leftmost face down card is flipped face up, repeating the process.

As you’ve probably guessed, it’s a good idea to plan your momentous turns for when two or more of your Kinsect allies are in play.

Weapon Upgrades

Just like the Ancient Forest hunters, you’ll start with a unique attack deck based on the insect glaive and upgrade options you can craft from bone and ore.

The more monster loot you claim, the better your weapon choices become!

MHW-Blog-15-Insect-Glaive-Weapon-Cards

Fighting Style

It’s not surprising that the insect glaive hunter’s attacks are basic to begin with, becoming incredibly powerful once the Kinsects get to work.

Still, what they lack in starting impact, they make up for in speed. Like dual blades, insect glaive is one of the more mobile hunters, good at dodging monster attacks with their agility 2 cards.

Rising Slash Combo is a great example of an insect glaive attack:

MHW-Blog-15-Insect-Glaive-Rising-Slash

At first glance, this card doesn’t seem that special.

Sure, agility 2 is useful, but otherwise it’s just a range 1 melee attack with 1 damage card.

But check out the white Kinsect symbol.

If you play this attack while the white Kinsect is in play, you can either gain bonus movement before inflicting damage, or place a break token on the monster part you hit!

Reaping Slash is another great example:

MHW-Blog-15-Insect-Glaive-Reaping-Slash

Notice the orange Kinsect symbol?

At the end of your turn, if Reaping Slash is the rightmost attack card on your stamina board while your orange Kinsect is in play, you can remove Reaping Slash AND the attack card to its left before you draw a time card.

These two cards are removed in addition to any the time card lets you remove, which means you’ll recover stamina at a super fast rate — fast enough to dodge monster attacks next time the monster takes a turn!

Finally, it’s the red Kinsect’s turn.

Check out Tornado Slash:

MHW-Blog-15-Insect-Glaive-Tornado-Slash

A powerful finishing move, this attack will end your turn.

(You can tell this by the stamina bar that ends in the middle of the card.)

And there it is — the red Kinsect symbol.

If Tornado Slash is played while your red Kinsect is in play, you’ll draw four damage cards instead of two.

Now imagine landing multiple red Kinsect attacks in a single turn!

Tactical Tips

To get the most from the insect glaive hunter, you’ll need to both plan ahead and be ready to seize the moment.

Plan your aggressive moves for when you have two or three Kinsect cards face up. Save preparation actions like sharpening your weapon or drinking potions for your one-Kinsect turns.

But don’t pass up chances, either. The cards in your hand and the Kinsect card that’s revealed could present an opportunity you shouldn’t refuse.

Say it’s your turn, and you happen to draw a full hand of red Kinsect attacks — right before you flip your red Kinsect card.

That’s a great time to launch headlong into the fray and drop a HUGE amount of damage!

Place au Charge Blade Hunter…

Charge Blade Hunter

From the journal of Jamie Perkins, Lead Developer

You may be wondering why some hunters have special rules.

During the making of Monster Hunter World: The Board Game, we tried to stick to the core mechanics we’d created.

For example, all the weapon mechanics for the Ancient Forest hunters can be found on their weapon cards, with no extra cards needed.

However, things weren’t so simple when it came to the Wildspire Waste set.

As you might remember from the video game, the weapons in this set come with some pretty unique features. To really squeeze the juice from that Divineapple (and give you guys the best tabletop experience), we realised we’d have to break our own rule to stick to core mechanics, and add in special rules cards for those hunters to represent those features.

Ah, the things we do to make accurate board games.

TL;DR - Unlike the hunters of the Ancient Forest, the Wildspire Waste hunters — and possibly some others who may or may not make an appearance later — come with special rules cards.

Okay, that’s enough background for now. Let’s check out the charge blade hunter’s special rules card!

Special Rules Card

The charge blade hunter’s special rule does exactly that: charges up their blade.

MHW-Blog-16-ChargeBlade-SpecialRules

Just like in the video game, this hunter uses sword & shield attacks featuring phial symbols, known as ‘phial attacks’, to build up a charge.

When that charge is high enough, their blade morphs into a giant axe ready to unleash a punishing phial discharge attack!

Of course, you’ll need to maintain that charge ready for the big finish. To do that, you’ll need to keep those phial attack cards on your stamina board until you’re ready — so think carefully about which cards you clear from your board as you play.

Whenever you decide to unleash a phial discharge attack, every face up phial attack card that’s on your stamina board will add an extra damage card to that discharge attack.

If you play your cards right, you can do some serious damage!

Weapon Upgrades

Just like the Ancient Forest hunters, the charge blade hunter starts with a unique attack deck based on their weapon, and upgrade options you can craft from bone and ore.

The more monster loot you claim, the better your weapon choices become.

MHW-Blog-16-ChargeBlade-Fan

Fighting Style

Outside of building and discharging phials, the charge blade hunter has a pretty defensive playstyle. Take Shield Block, for example:

MHW-Blog-16-ChargeBlade-ShieldBlock

You’ve seen cards like this before in the sword & shield hunter’s journal entry, so we won’t dwell too long on this.

The main thing to note is that even though the cards are similar, the bonus armour from Shield Block is less than the bonus armour the sword & shield hunter gets from Guard Up.

Still, the sword & shield hunter doesn’t have a fancy chargeable weapon. Speaking of which…

MHW-Blog-16-ChargeBlade-ShieldThrust

Not only does Shield Thrust help to build up your phial charge, it also hits the monster with a stun token — which, depending on the monster’s resistance and how many stun tokens you’ve already stacked, could stun the monster and make avoiding their next attack a little easier.

Shield Thrust is the charge blade hunter’s only starting deck stun card, so if you draw it, use it!

And speaking of using things, we might as well make use of the small phial charge we just built up:

MHW-Blog-16-ChargeBlade-AmpedElementDischarge

Amped Element Discharge is a phial discharge attack and one of your big finishing moves.

Because it comes with a bonus 1 node movement before you inflict damage, you can position yourself right where you want to be before landing that crippling blow!

On its own, this attack only draws one damage card, but you’ll draw one extra damage card for every phial attack on your stamina board.

If you’ve filled your other stamina slots with phial attack cards before playing Amped Element Discharge, you’ll be drawing a massive FIVE damage cards in one hit!

Tactical Tips

The charge blade hunter is a team player, ready to fill the role required for the group to succeed.

Need to take one for the team? Hunker down behind the increased armour given by Shield Block.

Or maybe they need you to crank out damage? Then start stacking phial attack cards and unleash the fury with Amped Element Discharge*!*

Faut dire que SFG pour leurs adaptations de JV, ça a toujours été minimaliste voire austère en terme de design. Volonté de Capcom?

Au tour du Switch Axe Hunter…

Switch Axe Hunter

From the journal of Jamie Perkins, Lead Developer

Fancy a fluid fighting style? Then the switch axe is for you!

Switch-Axe-Hunter-Model

When it comes to this hunter, the clue’s in the name. They switch between two fighting styles, making deft, precise attacks with their axe, and inflicting tremendous damage with their sword.

Sounds epic, right? The key is knowing which style to use in what situation.

Special Rule

As we covered in the charge blade hunter’s journal, the Wildspire Waste hunters each have a special rules card.

The switch axe hunter’s special rule gives them not one, but two attack decks:

Switch-Axe-Special-Rules-Card

Instead of one 20 card attack deck, you get two 10 card decks — one for your axe attacks, and one for your sword attacks.

When it comes to drawing cards, it’s up to you to decide which deck you draw from. Your hand can include all sword attacks, all axe attacks, or a combination of both.

And if you’re playing a turn that lets you make more than one attack, you can even switch between your sword and axe in the same turn.

Weapon Upgrades

Just like the Ancient Forest hunters, you’ll start with a unique attack deck based on the switch axe and upgrade options you can craft from bone and ore. The more monster loot you claim, the better your weapon choices become!

Switch-Axe-Hunter-Card-Fan

Axe Fighting Style

Switching weapons means switching fighting styles.

The axe comes with more movement for faster attacks, but the attacks often do less damage.

Forward Slash is a great example:

Switch-Axe-Forward-Slash-Attack-Card

All axe cards are agility 2, so they’re awesome for sprinting around the board and dodging monster attacks.

Like Forward Slash, they also often come with bonus movement, which can help you get in range of the monster ready for your next attack.

As above, drawing a single damage card is pretty typical of axe attacks, so use these when you’re in need of movement or starting off a new combo.

Sword Fighting Style

First thing to note:

All sword attacks come with zero agility. So, if this hunter needs to dodge, they’ll be using face down axe attacks to do it.

Second thing to note:

The sword is the switch axe hunter’s BIG damage dealing weapon, which means sword attacks are often combo 1. In short, you’ll need to have played at least one face up attack card before playing a sword attack in order to build up to the big hit.

Take Element Discharge, for example:

Switch-Axe-Element-Discharge-Attack-Card

One of the more brutal cards in the sword deck, this attack is a powerful finishing move, which is why it’s combo 3. You’ll need three other face up attack cards on your stamina board before you can play it.

Manage to play Element Discharge, though, and you’ll deal some serious damage, drawing three damage cards AND dropping a stun token in one hit.

In fact, this attack is so momentous that it’s actually a combo ender.

Notice the yellow stamina bar that finishes in the middle of the card?

That means playing this attack ends your combo and your turn, so only play it once you’ve done everything you want to do.

Pro tip: Axe attack cards are great for starting off new combos and getting you into position to deal heavy sword damage.

Tactical Tips

As we said at the start, the key to the switch axe hunter is knowing which attack deck to draw from at any given time.

At the end of their turn, hunters get the chance to discard unwanted cards from their hand and draw back up to five.

Making this choice is even more important for you than your fellow hunters, and you’ll need to pay close attention to what’s happening on the board when deciding what to discard.

Once you’ve discarded, you’ll then have to decide how many cards to draw from your axe deck, and how many from your sword deck, too.

Don’t forget to consider your stamina board, either. If you’re already building a combo, perhaps a few sword attacks would be a smart choice, giving you the tools to deal heavy damage.

But if you’re in the firing line and likely to be hit by the next monster attack, high agility axe cards could be your best bet for dodging out of the way!

Le focus du jour sur le Heavy Bowgun Hunter…

The Heavy Bowgun Hunter

From the journal of Jamie Perkins, Lead Developer

Meet your long range fire support.

Heavy-Bowgun-Board-Game-Miniature

Laying down suppressing fire from the moment battle begins, with ammunition for almost every situation, it’s the heavy bowgun hunter!

And when I say long range, I mean it. This hunter has the longest range weapon in the game. There are few places the monster can go that you can’t reach with a hail of fire!

Speaking of range, let’s check out this hunter’s special rules card…

Special Rules Card

Because of the sheer range of their attacks, there’s a chance the heavy bowgun hunter’s shots might deviate.

Heavy-Bowgun-Special-Rules-Card

This can work both for and against you.

On one hand, your attacks could pierce through the monster’s armour at a critical distance. But if your aim slips, you could miss the monster completely.

If you do manage to land repeat hits, the heavy bowgun is up there with the great sword as one of the highest damage output hunters in the game.

So, how does deviation work? Let’s take a look.

Deviatation Cards

Firing the bowgun is no easy feat! It’s heavy and cumbersome to handle.

Because of this, every time you make an attack, you’ll draw from your deviation deck.

Heavy-Bowgun-Deviation-Deck

The cards in your deviation deck will depend on which heavy bowgun you have equipped at the time. This is known as your deviation rating.

Your starting bowgun, the ‘Iron Assault’ has low deviation. In its 10 card deviation deck, there are only two Miss cards.

And because you draw two deviation cards each time you fire, choosing only one to use, your chances of missing are low.

Deviation cards also control which arc of the monster you attack, regardless of where you’re standing. Some deviation cards even ignore monster armour.

You might even draw one deviation card that lets you target a monster part you really want to break, and another card that ignores monster armour but attacks a different part. The choice will be yours.

Weapon Upgrades

Just like every other hunter, you’ll start with a unique attack deck based on the Heavy Bowgun and upgrade options you can craft from bone and ore.

The more monster loot you claim, the better your weapon choices become!

Heavy-Bowgun-Weapon-Cards

Fighting Style

In some games, ‘ranged fire support’ might mean ‘stand at the back and pepper the monster with attacks’.

But not in Monster Hunter World: The Board Game.

Every monster in the game has a decent number of attacks that target the furthest hunter. So, you’ll need to be just as thoughtful with your position as the rest of your party.

And because the heavy bowgun hunter is on the low end for agility, you’ll need to consider not only where to move, but when. You need to be able to avoid monster attacks, too!

Of course, this hunter gives as good as they get.

A key part of this hunter’s arsenal is the ability to ignore some monster armour using their special ammunition types, like Pierce Ammo 1:

Heavy-Bowgun-Pierce-Ammo-1-Card

Pierce Ammo 1 highlights the incredible striking distance of the heavy bowgun. Check out that range 4 attack!

Sure, you’ll draw only one damage card, but you’ll also ignore 1 point of monster armour, making your attack that much more potent.

Not to mention attack cards like Pierce Ammo 1 can also stack with the armour-reducing effects of deviation cards.

And that’s not all.

The heavy bowgun hunter is also one of the best at breaking monster parts, using attacks like Cluster Bomb 1:

Heavy-Bowgun-Cluster-Bomb-1-Card

Not only does Cluster Bomb 1 deal two damage cards AND a break token, but it also lets you place an additional break token on another part of the monster!

Still, it has a shorter range than Pierce Ammo 1 at “just” range 3. Although the heavy bowgun is the longest ranged weapon in the game, not all the attacks are range 4.

Of course, range 3 is nothing to sniff at. Just check out this showstopper:

Heavy-Bowgun-Wyvernsnipe-Card

Wyvernsnipe is — there’s no better word for it — monstrous.

This accurately named attack packs three damage cards, a stun token, AND a bonus node of movement into one rectangular package.

(That bonus movement involves backing away from the monster after you’ve attacked, because you’ll probably want to take a step back after landing this blow!)

Did you spot the other detail?

On top of all that, Wyvernsnipe also totally ignores monster armour. Any damage cards you draw are knocked straight off the monster’s health, with no reductions!

These incredible offensive capabilities do come with some drawbacks. It takes time for your hunter to line up the shot, so this is the only attack card you can play in a turn.

And because the stamina bar ends in the centre of the card, playing it will also end your turn. But talk about a big finish!

Tactical Tips

Because the heavy bowgun hunter has low agility and no armour-boosting attack cards, your positioning will be your first line of defence.

Don’t get too distracted by all the damage you can do with your attack cards. Remember to pay attention to where the monster is, and where your fellow hunters are standing.

Keep an eye on the cards drawn from your deviation deck, too. If you’ve not seen any of your Miss cards in the first few attacks, your chance of drawing two Misses gets higher, and you could end up wasting a crucial attack.

Hunters, it’s just 6 days until the Monster Hunter World: The Board Game campaign launches on Kickstarter.

You’ve already had a peek at what the pledge levels will include (Entry, Core, and All-In).

Want a closer look at what’s already included?

Then just check out the size of the monsters in the Ancient Forest set, which is in every pledge level! And is that Kushala Daora we spy on the end (available as an Add-On and in the All-In pledge)?

MHW-Board-Game-Monster-Scale

As a reminder, there are nine unique monsters in the Core Pledge — including seven extra large monsters with 100mm bases, and one extra EXTRA large monster with a 120mm base*! — and eight unique hunters.

(*Hint: It’s Diablos!)

MHW-Core-Pledge-HLO

Together, those hunters and monsters make up two core sets with 30 hours of gameplay each: the Ancient Forest, and the Wildspire Waste.

We’ve already encountered the four Ancient Forest hunters and monsters, and gotten a feel for just how different their playstyles, attacks, and behaviours really are.

And now we’ve also assembled our Wildspire Waste party, we’ll soon be hunting the Wildspire Waste monsters, too!

That will take us up to launch on April 20, where we’ll begin encountering the massive Elder Dragons (like Kushala Daora) included in the All-In…

…but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Today, we’re getting a taste of something else that’s in store for the campaign — unlocks!

Kickstarter Campaign Unlocks

If you’ve played the video game, you’ll know there are bonuses you get just for logging in.

They’re not tied to your achievements, score, or hours played. They’re just extra gifts you get to say “thanks” for being part of the Monster Hunter: World… world.

The unlocks for the Monster Hunter World: The Board Game Kickstarter campaign will work in exactly the same way.

There won’t be stretch goals that are unlocked once you reach a certain funding level.

Instead, every day, we’ll automatically unlock an extra reward that will be added to every Core and All-In Pledge for free!

(The Entry Pledge was created to give all Monster Hunter: World fans a chance to get in on the monster hunting action. So, to keep the price low, the unlocks won’t be included in this pledge level.)

These daily rewards, or daily unlocks, are designed to enhance your experience and add more cosmetic options to your campaigns.

There may even be some extra pals to tag along on your hunts, too…
