Update #63 - March Update: Packing Diagrams, Box Fit, Rules Cards
Hey Backers! It’s spring here on the Oregon coast, which means plenty of sunshine and plenty of rain - sometimes at the same time, hah! I hope this update finds you well. We’ve been hard at work gearing up for production, so let’s get into some of what’s happening BTS (behind the scenes, as the kids say).
It’s beautiful here on the Oregon coast! My brother and his kids, and Abby’s sister and her kids all flew in to celebrate Judah’s birthday!

Estimated Delivery: Fall, 2024Packing Diagrams
We are still in pre-production, waiting on some components from our manufacturer before everything is green-lit and ready for mass production. We’re looking ahead to the next step, which is final assembly! For a smooth process, I’ve been working this month on creating all of the diagrams and documentation for the production team, so they know exactly how to assemble Arydia!
We start with the components that will be pre-packaged. This includes the treasure chests, the player miniatures tray, the boxes containing the foe miniatures, etc. Here’s an example of the Path Slipcases:
These are fairly straight forward to make, and to avoid spoilers, we won’t go into the rest of it! Here’s another one for the player miniatures tray. These are renders I made to communicate clearly with Panda; the final versions will of course be pre-painted miniatures!
Once we have everything packed up individually, it’s then time to put it all together into the main box!
Box Fit
I spent a good deal of time working on exactly how to arrange all of the components in the box. I’ve played with a multitude of permutations; it’s not as straight forward as you might initially think! It’s 3D Tetris puzzle to get everything to fit, but that’s just the beginning! Here are some of the things I considered in this process:
- Vertical weight: We don’t want heavy components sitting on top of lighter components! This is simple enough; anyone who has packed a grocery bag could tell you this.
- Lateral weight: If the box is jostled sideways, or tilted on either side or either end, we don’t want heavy components crushing lighter components!
- Upside-down weight: We also can’t have lighter components crushed if the box is flipped upside down! Now this is getting tricky!
- Flush to the top of the box: This is a sub-bullet of the one above. To ensure that nothing shifts around if the box is flipped upside-down, everything needs to be at the same height, without empty space between the top components and the box lid.
- Ease of use: Some components are used every time you play Arydia (maps, dice, index boxes etc.), but some components are used less often (FIG boxes, dossiers, legacy boxes). To that end, we want easy access to components that you’ll use all the time. For example, you shouldn’t have to shift the dossiers out of the way to reach the maps.
- Expansions: We promised both the Epic Hunt and Small Bodies expansion boxes would fit inside the main box, so we need to have enough ‹ negative space › for those to fit.
- Minimal Component Changes: We may need to resize or slightly change a few components for everything to fit nicely! We want to do this with the fewest number of component changes.
- Aesthetics: If we’re making something, we should try to make it beautiful! The layout should be pleasing and orderly.
It was quite a challenge to hit all of these goals! We have lots of uniquely shaped components, and we did not design them to be an easily solvable Tetris puzzle!
One tool I used in this process was to model everything in 3D using Blender. This allowed me to zoom around the box and see with ‹ x-ray › vision, so I could easily tell when a design was working or not.
Blender lets us easily visualize the box contents!
In Blender, I could easily put each item on a separate layer and toggle them on and off. It was instrumental in helping me make all the packing steps cohesive!
Then, I used the 3D model and the PPC itself to create a 20 page document detailing exactly how we want Panda to pack everything into the Arydia box! Here are a couple pages of it:
I’m very pleased with the design we ended up with. To make it all work, I’ve designed a small cardboard insert:
We just had a meeting this morning with our manufacturer to review the design and packing documents. I’m pleased to say we were able to hit the majority of our goals, and we only need to very slightly resize two of the Legacy boxes.
This design meets all of our criteria: supporting vertical, lateral, and upside-down weight considerations. A big breakthrough was when I realized we could stack the Index boxes on top of the Path Slipcases:
This allows for two of the heaviest components to sit on top of each other, and it also makes the indexes much easier to access! You can easily slide them off and lift them out! Some of my previous designs had the Index boxes on the bottom, which you’d end up pulling the lid off them accidentally!
That’s probably more detail than you wanted on box fitting, but it’s an important aspect of functional design and I’m really excited about it! Also, it makes for the best possible setup/put away times, which we’ll talk about in another update!
Skill Tree Change
The PPC showed us a flaw with our skill tree design: the skill trees that hold the skill tiles for each player mat were difficult to use. Because the skill tiles are 56mm long, when you’d push down to ‹ pop › them out of their slot, sometimes the tiles would bend instead of popping out! Panda thought we could maybe solve this problem by switching to an ultra-dense cardboard, but I thought we could probably fix it by altering the design slightly.
Skill tile would bend slightly in the middle, and be difficult to remove. Not the end of the world, but not great!
Instead of pushing down on the right side of the tile, I moved the axis to be horizontal. Panda made a prototype white sample for me to test:
Skill tiles pop up nicely! No more bending!
Please note this is a hand-made prototype, so the diecuts are very rough. The final version will look nice and clean-cut!
Pressing down on the bottom of the skill tile pops the top of the tile right up, so it’s easy to grab! No more bending issues!
Rules Cards - What Ira’s Been Up To!
This month Ira has spent the majority of his time doing one last pass over the rules reference cards for all the skills and items in the game! This pass has mainly been about syntax, formatting, and consistent templating, not balancing skills or items, since we are already very happy and confident in the balance of everything at this point!
For each skill or item type in the game, we have a rules reference card. This card details all of the rules for that skill. For example, the Path of Valor has rules cards for Swords, Spears, and Shield items, as well as for skills like Shield Bash, Spin Attack, Discipline, etc. These rules cards pair with the skill tile or item tile, allowing each player quick access to the rules that matter to their character. Once you know the rules, the item/skill tile contains all the information you need to use it.
Again, this isn’t a balance pass; this is a beautifying pass, making everything more clear, legible, and streamlined!
Flythrough Testing
While we’re still in pre-production, we have Luke, Alex, and Sam all running through the entire campaign again, but this time it’s what we call a ‹ flythrough. › A flythrough means to play through, read everything, and do everything, except the combats. At this point, we are confident in the combats and balance, so we’re using the flythroughs to catch things like grammar issues, formatting, touch-ups, etc.
We can still update text on cards before production, so the team is taking this last chance to see if we can find anything to fix!
Conclusion
Ok! That’s all I’ve got for the update today! My next task is to make the the spec/packing instructions for the Epic Hunt expansion, and make those minor size changes to the box lid and the Legacy boxes! Thanks so much for joining me today on this update!
Until our paths do cross again,
-Cody
Où ça sent clairement 2025…
Dernier update reçu hier. En substance : il pleut dans l’Oregon et il mange des œufs frais. Bref, ça suit son cours.
Et il fait du karaté Le reste de l’update n’est bien sûr qu’anecdotique…
April Update: Manufacturing Update, Miniatures, and Printed Component Polish
Manufacturing Update
We have been working steadily alongside our manufacturer Panda to get Arydia into mass production as soon as possible! As a reminder, in February, we carefully reviewed the Pre-Production Copy (PPC), providing feedback to Panda and making notes for ourselves. Panda took all our notes, and I’m pleased to report that we submitted final printed files to them earlier this month! At this point, the only things we’re waiting on are miniature-related, which I’ll describe in more detail below. While we haven’t started mass production quite yet, we are getting very close! We built some buffer into the manufacturing schedule, so I believe we are still on track to deliver Arydia to you in November.
Miniatures
The process of making good pre-painted miniatures requires many steps. Before we even ran the Kickstarter years ago, we did our initial design sketches and sent those to our design studio, Barruz Studios. We did many rounds of revisions with them to get the 3d models exactly how we wanted. Next, we did multiple 3d prints of those miniatures, ensuring they were the correct physical size, finally landing on 22mm bases. Then, I hand-painted the 3d printed miniatures to make the paint masters and I sent those to Panda, along with the 3d files. Last year, we got the 3d printed painted samples back from Panda and did a few revisions, until everything was just how we wanted. The final two steps to make it to production are Final Molds (this is where Panda makes steel molds for injection plastic molding) and Final Painting.
Initial sketch to final 2D artwork! For Arydia, we decided to start with 2D designs, then build the 3D sculpts to match!
Each miniature went through multiple iterations to try and match the 2d artwork as closely as possible.
Left to right: Pre-Kickstarter 3d print, 3d print (Cody painted for the Kickstarter), first 3d printed/painted sample from manufacturer, second 3d printed/painted sample from manufacturer, injected plastic mold.
Last month, we received and reviewed the first batch of miniatures that were made from the injected plastic molds! The status of the few remaining miniature items are as follows:
- Foe (monster) miniatures: All injected plastic molds are approved!
- Player miniatures: All exterior injected plastic molds are approved. The first batch of heads didn’t fit exactly right; Panda has already made revisions based on my directions.
- Player and foe miniature trays: I should be getting the samples for these from Panda soon, at which time I anticipate approving them without issue.
Currently a package is on the way and contains the full set of painted miniatures with revised sculpts, made using the final mass-production methods. Overall, the progress on miniatures is good, and I will have even more information in the next few days, as soon as the package from Panda arrives!
Printed Component Polish
Even though we submitted final print files earlier this month, since we knew we’d still be waiting a little bit longer for the miniatures to be completely finalized, we decided to use the available time to do another extra pass on all the printed components. We brought in two of our veteran playtesters, Gladys and Tim, who demonstrated keen eyes for rules, grammar, and corner-cases! They brought their good energy and fresh sets of eyes to everything. Every card, token, and map has been poured over multiple times by multiple team members! Over the last few weeks, we made significant polish improvements to all text content, added to and clarified FAQs for every foe in the game, improved the cohesiveness and layout of all the rules cards for player skills, and revised the rulebook and quick start guide multiple times for added clarity and better flow. Though I think the game would have still been good without this polish, I’m confident that we used our time well and made the game even better. Here are some examples:
Example: We updated some text boxes to be homogenous across all cards. On the bottom of this card, we also updated the Loot rewards for the Quick Start Guide to teach players about loot rolls!
Combat Example - Path of Arcana: Last paragraph - updated for better clarity and more correctly reflects how foes resolve behaviors.
Quick Start Guide: Made a small change to allow teaching of Stairs and Floors inside of a location. Now ,players learn this as part of the introduction, rather than having to look it up later!
Seeing all the polish over the last few weeks, I just want to take a moment and thank the Far Off Games team: Ira, Alex, Luke, Sam, David, Tim, and Gladys. The skill and thoughtfulness poured into Arydia is so much more than I, Cody, could ever do on my own. I am so grateful to each person on the team for their tireless efforts and for continuing to push until we hit the finish line!
Conclusion
That’s all for this month; I hope you don’t mind the shorter update, but at this point, we have done everything we can, and we just need to give Panda the time they need to start mass production. I just checked the tracking # for the painted miniature samples; it’s just cleared customs in Oakland, CA, so I should have it within the week, and I’ll be sure to include the details in next month’s update. Thank you for your ongoing support and excitement as we approach the final stages of this project!
Until our paths do cross again,
-Cody

May Update: Production Begins!!!, Final Miniatures, and Base Rings
Hey Backers! I’m so glad to see you on this beautiful, last day of May! The sun is shining, birds are chirping, I’ve got a cup of tea, and a whole bunch of delicious miniatures sitting on my desk! Let me share with you what we’ve been up to this month here at Far Off Games!
Status Update
Topics: Production Begins, Final Miniatures, Base Rings
Action Required by Backers: None (Unless you want to add anything to your pledge!)
Pledge Manager Status: Specially open for ‹ Last Call ›!
Estimated Delivery: Fall, 2024Production Begins!!!
Production on Arydia has begun!!! I am so glad to be able to tell you this! The mass production process includes many elements of the supply chain working in parallel, including plastic miniatures, paper and printed components (e.g. maps, cards, the box, etc.), plastic trays + lids, wooden components (e.g. travel tokens, replica squill), other plastic components (e.g. armor cubes, wound tokens), and metal components (e.g. kae, party token). We are fortunate to have an expert team at Panda to coordinate all of this process!
As you might imagine, the plastic miniatures will take the longest to manufacture start to finish, so that’s what we’ve begun first. The other elements of the project will begin in the coming weeks so that everything finishes at approximately the same time, and then can be assembled into your boxes of Arydia!
Final Miniatures
These are just SOME of the miniatures you get in Arydia! All of these miniatures were shown in the Kickstarter campaign, so no spoilers here!
Final miniatures were sent to us earlier this month! If you remember last update, we were hoping the new molds for heads/bodies would fit, and that all the painted samples would be approved. The best news, (for me at least) was that all 18 player heads fit all 6 bodies! They snap in satisfyingly, and then pop back out again (but not without a little effort, so they shouldn’t just come out during normal play).
Out of the 50+ miniatures we received, only a few of them didn’t meet our standards.
Two of the monster miniatures needed a stronger pigment; the tint of their primary colors were a bit anemic and didn’t match their vibrant artwork. The now-final versions are great! I can’t share any pictures for spoiler reasons, but when you pull these miniatures out of their secret compartment, I think you’ll be pleased! There were a couple issues with the painting on some of the player miniatures heads (see below). The main issue was the wash being used on the heads didn’t seem to match the rest of the miniatures. Also, there were a couple of minor painting changes to ensure hairlines were applied correctly.
I’m pleased to say Panda took quick action with the feedback and was able to get us revised samples which were all in line with our specifications! All miniatures have been approved for production!
Bases and Base Rings
Along with the shipment of miniatures, we also received production samples of the colored base rings. These base rings are used to differentiate monster miniatures and help players easily track which monster corresponds to which hit grid card. They come in two sizes, smaller round base rings for 1x1 ‹ normal › size miniatures, and long for 2x1 ‹ large › size miniatures.
These look beautiful and we were able to color match the hit grid cards, so they help maintain a smooth gaming experience!
Bonus Unlocked - Player Base Rings!
We had originally planned / designed the base rings to be strictly for the monster miniatures; when facing a group of them, you can quickly tell them apart. The base rings came out so well that on a whim I tried on the base rings on the player miniatures.
Base rings in each player color!
Since we intentionally designed each normal miniature base in Arydia to be exactly the same dimensions, the base rings fit beautifully. They looked so nice, I couldn’t resist asking the team if we could add these to every copy of Arydia!
In addition to being beautiful to look at - they also provide a heightened level of clarity, helping you quickly distinguish player miniatures, and improve Arydia’s visual accessibility.
Player Miniature Tray
We also received the first sample of the player miniatures tray! It looks fantastic!
We are planning a slight revision to more easily get the heads out of their compartments. As mentioned above, plastic trays are on their own, separate supply chain stream, which has a much shorter overall production timeline than the plastic miniatures.
So, we have time to make this small revision to the plastic tray without increasing the overall production timeline!
Expansions
We also got the final production samples for our two expansions - Epic Hunt, and Small Bodies! They both are looking so good - I’m super pleased with the results:
Epic Hunt
Epic Hunt comes with 1 miniature, 9 alternate character skills, and 27 cards!
Small Bodies
Small Bodies expansion provides small-stature miniatures for each path! They are SO adorable!
Last Chance Pledge (This Week Only!)
We have locked in our production numbers - so we have limited stock, but we want to give you backers one last chance to add items to your pledge at the current Kickstarter discounts! After this week we’ll be closing everything and the remaining stock will be sold at increased prices! If you wanted to grab Epic Hunt, Small Bodies, or any of the XIA products - now’s your last chance to get in at these campaign prices!

Conclusion
That’s all for this update - I hope you enjoyed all the pictures! It’s really a very enjoyable part of the project for me and the team - seeing all our hard work become real, physical components! I am getting more and more excited - especially now that Arydia is officially in production! There’s still a good way to go - before Arydia ultimately arrives on your doorstep - but I’m really enjoying our journey together! Thank you, dear backer, for joining me!
