Salut,
VI!

"Good afternoon Soldiers. As you and your troops fight the good fight across the world, HQ has compiled another update on your arms acquisition request. As the factories produce your much needed supplies, HQ needs your input and asks that you are briefed on an important manufacturing choice.

You can read the update or get a summary of some of the important points in our Mega Manufacturing Update and War Crate Poll Video here: https://youtu.be/-BSXqK6ru6U

https://youtu.be/-BSXqK6ru6U

The War Crate has changed. The metal version did not end up being able to reliably and consistently support the weight of a full CoH bundle without warping and bending, even with a reinforced floor. This was due to the combination of the crate’s wide dimensions and the game weight. The horizontal plane was just too wide and the engineering specs did not predict it. It holds, but it warps. This was a product idea developed mid-Kickstarter campaign so it did not have the advantage of a lot of preliminary testing. So after this was discovered this summer the team has been searching and testing alternative solutions rather than just giving up on a CoH Board Game storage system.

Our goal for the war crate has always been to create a fun and functional storage system for the diverse products of the Company of Heroes board game system. We have gone ‹ all in › on many a kickstarter ourselves, and ended up with multiple stacks of different sized boxes crowding our game shelves (I’m looking at you Dark Souls). One advantage we had while looking for a solution is BCG never intended to make a profit on the War Crate, which opened up some options.

We ended up selecting the following solution. Personally, I love it. The team is actually much more excited about this war crate than the previous one, and in our opinion it was a happy accident that the previous tin version failed. The new model, while plastic, is 10 times sturdier than the previous one and has some nice thematic structures, clasps, hinges, locks, and lids. Of course this is a fairly last minute change so if anyone does not like this war crate, even after it arrives, we will refund you.

Our video specialist John is very happy with the War Crate (John is 6 feet tall for reference)

While the old tin War Crate was bulky and surprisingly flimsy, this collapsible, hard plastic War Crate is sturdy, convenient, and thematic. The final external dimensions of the expanded crate are 59cmx39cmx34.5cm (23 x 15 x 13") for all those making room in their board game closets. This war crate will hold a World Domination bundle plus a 2 player core set.* Note that including the 2 player core set requires consolidating the Solo Expansion and World Builder pack; both of which consolidate very well. By consolidate, we mean removing their contents from their packaging and storing them inside other boxes or just inside the war crate.

The new War Crate folds down and locks into a smaller profile for when you want to store it separately.

While the physical War Crate has been finalized, the printing design does not have to be finalized for another couple of days. As such, headquarters has prepared two designs, which the team is divided on: the ‹ US › Ammo Crate or the ‹ Allies Supply Crate ›. If you have a preference, particularly if you pre-ordered a War Crate, please vote for US or Allies and help decide which version we go with. Note that this is going to print in less than 48 hours so you will have to vote quickly.

The US Crate

The US War Crate is inspired by WW2 munitions crates and ammo boxes. The strength of the US design is it’s cohesiveness. The yellow panels are reminiscent of the bold WW2 crates typeface and stand out on our dark green War Crate.

The US version leans into a more decimated and weathered look, again reminiscent of WW2 ammo crates.

Some team members argue that the US color scheme is more cohesive than the Allies.

This side is one of our favorites, and is included as a side panel on both versions of the war crate. Note the vehicle list items will change location and order depending on which version you vote for.

This is the large side panel unique to the US War Crate version. For those who are interested, the NSN number ends with 6 26 2019, the last day of the Company of Heroes Board Game Kickstarter. The weight is accurate to a World Domination bundle plus Early Bird Pathfinder and Eastern Reinforcements Pack. The Load represents our expected freight loading day.

The Allies Crate

The Allies version of the War Crate has a side dedicated to the US, the British, and Soviet factions. The strength of this design is its diverse content and unique style.

The « Allies » version dedicates one side of the crate to the Soviet, British and US factions each. Sorry this soviet side is a bit low res. It will be crisper in real life

This panel design utilizes a distinctive Soviet Union style font, and is inspired by Soviet Union munitions crates. This design complements the the rest of the Allies’ box with a more striking and bold approach, rounding out the Allies Crate.

These British Panels came together as our favorite design across both boxes. However, the yellow paint used in the US Crate clashes severely with the red soviet panel, and so both British panels are off white like the title. So the US crate uses light grey and yellow and the Allies crate uses light grey and red.

Allies White

There is a third option. The international Allies version where the Soviet side is in white allows us to keep the lower long panels in degraded yellow. (the red and yellow clash too much to have them on the same crate.) This third option has perhaps the less jarring color scheme of the US and the Ammo Crate yellow panels while keeping the international Allies content. We will call this the Allies White version for voting.

WAR CRATE SUMMARY: We apologize for springing this change on you at the last minute. We wanted to keep a storage solution available for the CoH Board Game, and we think this is a better option. Please contact us at support@badcrowgames.com if you have any qualms or feedback about the new War Crate. Otherwise vote in the comments section for US, Allies, or Allies White.

Stretch Goal Unlocks

Bringing the total to 8 Emplacement models which also double as MG bunkers for the US and Wehrmacht.

1500 British Emplacement Packs unlocked additional emplacement models. The British Emplacements are identified with large circular punchboard tokens/tiles in the Core Set. But with so many 3D elements on the board they can be over-looked. The emplacements were custom designed by one of our modelers from New Zealand, Zachary Kavulich. They are designed to hold any of the standard weapons as well as the Bofors miniatures, along with 2 upgrade dice. (Note this was actually unlocked a while ago we just forgot to announce it, all British Emplacements have already been produced and these bonus emplacements will not delay the project.)

+2 Bonus Destroyed Buildings Unlocked

This unlock is not going to be as exciting for some of you because of an error on the Terrain Pack 2 description the first week of the Pledge Manager. Originally there were 6 destroyed buildings included in Terrain Pack 2. Due to a typo, the description for the first week said 9 destroyed buildings, which wasn’t correct, (9 is the amount of regular buildings in Terrain Pack 1, which is what probably caused the confusion when the PM data was being entered). (Note: throw Riley under the bus here;). The mistake was corrected once it was discovered a week later. The actual total was supposed to be 6 destroyed buildings, enough to cover all maps and enough to cover more destroyed building locations than usually exist in games. But two more would be welcome and allow for more map customization. Upon reaching 1600 Terrain Pack 2 orders we have unlocked those additional 2 destroyed buildings. So depending on when you ordered Terrain Pack 2 this will seem like an upgrade or a downgrade. Regardless, 8 destroyed buildings will be nice to have as part of your CoH terrain.

Cathedral Converted to ABS

Just the small portion of the Cathedral arrived today to showcase the new ABS plastic material. The primary Cathedral section and towers are just finishing up their production run and will be ready to begin packaging next week.

The large cathedral was converted into ABS plastic which can be more brittle but also can have a harder and more chiseled look. Its a really nice upgrade for the Cathedral and the model was re-engineered to have twice the thickness of its previous walls and support structures and is now 80% heavier. It feels as massive as it looks

BEGINNER’S RULEBOOK

Since the KickStarter we always planned on having beginner boards, which would be simpler versions of the building boards that used the standard rules-set. The reason for the beginner boards was of course to make the game more accessible. Company of Heroes uses a simple underlying game system but incorporates a very wide breadth of rules that can be overwhelming to casual gamers their first time out. The Beginner Boards never worked out quite well because of the sheer amount of exceptions that were required and the necessity to pick out the relevant rules within the more complex standard rules-set. We have developed, what we think to be, a far superior solution.

Click this button to view and comment on the new additional booklet included in the Core Set - the stand alone Beginner Rulebook.

We have created and are including an entirely separate and stand-alone Beginner’s Rulebook in the Core Set for new players to optionally start with. The Beginner’s Rulebook abstracts out the more granular rules like varying firing arcs, heavy vehicle movement and rotation ticks, experience gain, weapon team deployment status, retreating mechanics while still retaining the core strategic elements of the game. The beginner rules reinforce the key elements that players need to learn to play the game, such as damage type interactions, round sequence, purchasing and upgrading units and victory conditions without as much noise. Having grasped the core concepts, new players will be well prepared to make the shift to the full rule-set. The beginner rule-set retains a surprising amount of the feel of the standard game and we wouldn’t be surprised if many players stick with the beginner rule-set forever, possibly bringing in just the experience and commander card rules at some point. Regardless, they are a great place to start for your first game or when introducing the Company of Heroes Board Game to your gaming group. The PDF can be viewed here if you want to see the full booklet.

FINAL METAL STATUS

There was some back and forth on the final disposition of metal. For a moment the Product Manager thought we might have to cancel metal because of the increase in scale increased the mass of zinc required to produce the metal sets by 70%. But like the war crate, metal was never designed to be a profitable product. So we proceeded with metal. Also all Metal Upgrades will be in addition to the plastic vehicles and models. i.e. if you Ordered a Core Set with a Metal Upgrade, you will receive a regular Core Set with plastic miniatures and a separate full set of Metal Miniatures. (There was some debate on this so you may have heard that both of these possibilities were in the cards, but due to logistical reasons and shipping speeds, proceeding this way only costs a little more than not providing the plastic set and so BCG is including the extra set.) Thus Metal backers will have an extra set of plastic vehicles in their orders. If they want a painted set plus a metal set, they no longer have to purchase the additional Core Set, they can just purchase the paint upgrade. We are not painting metal, we decided. The metal and paint processes are occurring in totally different locations and the logistics get complicated for the 10 orders that were requesting this.

Also Metal will probably lag slightly behind the primary order so Metal will be Air Freighted rather than ocean freighted. Which means it will actually arrive at the fulfillment centers earlier than the main order, even though the manufacturer is just finishing up the Metal Molds now.

FINAL VEHICLES AND PAINTING AT HOME

Brandon used Citadel Contrast Paints to create this Sherman in approximately 10 minutes. We will include video links and QR codes in our painting guide insert in the Core Set.

Not everyone is going to go this detailed on their home painting, although Brandon will show you how he did this and the materials required to create this Sherman in less than 10 minutes. He says this was a very rough and quick paint job but to us it looks great.

Pre-KS sample grey vs final green. Grey looks a little sharper than the colored versions but we wanted to have the factions differentiated.

The vehicle models turned out good although some of the coloring and shades turned out a little different than expected. We spent a month this summer re-manufacturing the US and Soviet factions whose color turned out better but they still did not have quite the same look as our original pre-KS samples.

Final production Wehrmacht vehicles fresh off the molds. There remains a slight look of « softness » to the miniatures in their raw state as discussed below.

The factory is post-processing all of the vehicles with a pre-paint treatment/coating to help the miniatures take paint without a primer. We thought this might be adding to the « softer » look but after testing, the difference was negligible.

The Soviet faction was re-manufactured this summer to get this better shade of rust red.

As it turns out its just that all of our Pre-KS samples were in grey which just looks a little sharper than when we add color. Maybe this is why some of our favorite miniature games use only grey plastic. But we really wanted the factions to be visually different immediately upon opening the box without any paint necessary to distinguish between US and Wehrmacht etc… So this advantage had a slight trade off. One easily remedied with any matte or satin spray paint.

Same material, but the grey has a slightly better looking finish.

TAKING VEHICLES TO THE NEXT LEVEL

To take your vehicles to the next level we recommend a quick coat of any matte or satin spray paint. Perhaps because of the pre-treatment of the vehicles, its amazing what a 10 second light spray can accomplish. (You can see an example of this in the Mega Update Video here at minute 8:25. https://youtu.be/-BSXqK6ru6U

A painted Calliope sprayed with Krylon Italian Olive next to a raw Calliope straight from the box.

We are including a painting guide insert into the core set for those that want some guidance on what brands and colors we recommend for these quick sprays.

Spray painted Priest next to original grey.

In conclusion, the LD and the product manager have signed off on the miniatures and the factory is packing them into the faction trays as we speak. The new turret engravings that match each turret to its specific vehicle turned out to be a nice feature, especially if you are not ultra familiar with every WW2 vehicle’s shape and silhouette. All turrets fit perfectly snug yet rotate, and quality / detail across the board turned out great. We would have preferred a subtly different look to the finish, but that was the trade-off for having color differentiated factions.

Codes matching the name of the vehicle have been engraved into the bottom of every turret to help match these separate pieces up

Other Manufacturing

At this point we believe we have corrected and solved all manufacturing issues. The final matte vs glossy uv coating for card and building board samples arrive tomorrow. At that point the factories will begin their UV coating of the commander cards and building boards which are all printed and waiting. The printing of all English booklets, which have continued to be proof-read and edited by the translators and the crowd up until just this morning will begin next week and requires approximately 6 days.

One element the LD has always been worried about is the precision of the infantry bases combined with the infantry trays. The margin for error is so small at .5 mm or .02". Too large and they wont go in or get stuck, too small and they slide around and fall out. After some correction we believe we got it near perfect:

Not too big, not too tight. The infantry go in, stay in but can be pulled out without issue. Whew!

CAMO PAINTED SETS

Of course if you ordered a painted set of Company of Heroes then you need not worry about painting anything at home! The camo painted sets are taking a while to get started however. One reason is because they are printing all black miniatures specifically for the painted sets to serve as the base color, and they did not want to run black through the molds until they were done with all the other runs and re-prints in other colors. The other reason is we have had the supply chain running in circles correcting issues, remaking boxes, reprinting cards, adjusting coatings, searching for alternate war crates and more. Miles, our sourcing liaison is a champion, and we have been keeping him hopping.

As of now, the painting screens have been created and prepped and the barrels of camo paint have all arrived, but I do not have samples to show of these vehicles just yet. The paint engineer says he should be running his first camo vehicles next week and will send us photos as soon as he has done so. When he does, we will issue a mini-update specifically for Camo Paint rather than waiting and lumping it into a larger update. The pledge manager will not close before you have a chance to review the camo painted sets and adjust your orders accordingly.

There is a slight chance that the Camo Painted sets may not be finished before our new pack up date, which is fine, since in that case, we will air freight the Camo Painted sets and they will arrive ahead of the main shipments. So we will not hold up the primary shipments for the painted sets. Our product manager and Miles both think they will be finished before the pack up date however.

PLEDGE MANAGER REMAINS OPEN!

The Pledge Manager will remain open for the foreseeable future. We have inventory buffers for all regions so we are not going to run out of stock for a particular country even with some fluctuations and changes in orders. One reason it remains open is so that those waiting to see Camo painted sets, or optimized shipping can remain flexible and adjust their orders as desired.

SHIPPING OPTIMIZATION!

We have secured some shipping optimizations for the countries that were unusually expensive to ship to from our fulfillment centers. Each requires a different strategy and we will be sending emails directly to each backer from those countries outlining our plan and costs next week.

MECH COMMAND RTS Orders

All orders for Mech Command RTS from the Pledge Manager were shipped out yesterday. Due to some inventory issues in North America we fulfilled all of the orders from our UK warehouse and paid the difference for international shipping. You should be receiving tracking numbers in the next day or two.

FINAL PACK UP DATE: 9-17-2020

Our new pack up date, the day on which we can start picking up the product from the factory is 9-17-2020. I know this date keeps getting pushed back and we apologize for the delay. We had more delays and manufacturing challenges than we had buffered into our timeline. We expected some of course, but not quite as many as we had. Our original strategy to combat inevitable manufacturing challenges was to have our LD on site in China for the duration of manufacturing; so I guess we can blame Covid slightly for shipping delay.

But really the delay is our fault, and occurred last fall when we used up a lot of our built-in time buffer to further develop the game, add content and switch the scale from 1:120 to 1:100 . Using up the buffer back then left us none for manufacturing reprints and quality assurance now, which would have covered not all, but a large portion of the delays this summer. We apologize for this. This is another lesson learned; squander your time buffer at your own peril. Although I do not think the team would consider it squandered as the use of the buffer did result in improvements to the gameplay and components. But we should have been more efficient and in hindsight we could have used up less buffer if we did not develop Terrain Pack 2, World Builder and the Elite Infantry Pack. (Although their production went without a hitch and had zero manufacturing delays thankfully.) The factory IS quite confident of the September 17th pack date however, which even includes an extra 5 day buffer. Additional delay beyond that is unlikely. With every day that passes, as components are checked off and tested, there is less and less to go wrong and thus the factory estimates become increasingly reliable.

Actual Delivery: A pack up date of 9-17-2020 puts us at early October for Oceania, Mid-October for North America and Late October for Europe (for home delivery).

Final Note: VOTE

If you have dog in the fight please vote for your preference on War Crates. All you need to say is « US », « Allies » or « Allies White », but any other comments or feedback you have are welcome and encouraged."

Bonjour,

Europe: The European orders are scheduled for pick up from long term storage tomorrow to be freighted over land to the Sino-China rail depot for rail freight leaving on March 30th. Scheduled to arrive in Poland on April 6th but will have to process through customs and then a 90 minute drive to the Logistiko warehouse who have approved an April 8th delivery and will be ready to begin processing soon afterwards. Logistiko says if all goes well all EU orders (and surrounding areas like the Middle East, Russia etc…) will be processed and out of the warehouse by April 12th and in most backers’ hands 3-5 days afterwards.

Hello!

Ok . Cool.
Ca me rassure !
