Forging a New Era: Iron Kingdoms, Warmachine, Formula P3 Paint, and More

Welcome to the Iron Kingdoms.

We’ve got important news to share with you all. Here at Steamforged, we are beyond excited to announce we’ve acquired the incredible Iron Kingdoms universe from our friends at Privateer Press.

This includes the award-winning miniature fantasy wargame, Warmachine ; the hobby and painting line, Formula P3 Paint ; the Iron Kingdoms roleplaying series , and many more titles.

For the past twenty years, the Iron Kingdoms and Warmachine have enchanted players and hobbyists around the world with rich lore and immersive gameplay. Warmachine’s growth has been electric since the launch of Mark IV, with new and returning players around the world getting into the game.

Now, as we step into this new chapter, Steamforged and Privateer Press are teaming up to make sure your experience with these games is better than ever. There has never been a better time to start playing.

Going forward, we’ll work together on design and development of the lines. We at Steamforged will be bringing our proven 10-year track record of creating, developing, and delivering large-scale games to thousands of players and retailers around the world, to turn that growth from electric into explosive.

From Rich Loxam, our CEO and Founder: “This is a perfect, logical fit for us. Almost every aspect of Steamforged’s history can be traced back to Warmachine in some way or another. Both Mat Hart and I are Warmachine players, and Warmachine was actually a key inspiration for us creating Guild Ball, with its incredible world and well-designed gameplay. We couldn’t be more excited to bring our experience and infrastructure to the table to take Warmachine into its next era.”

From Mat Hart, our CCO and Founder: “There’s a real wealth of creative talent and, as you might expect, genuine passion for tabletop gaming in our team. In particular, we all share a special kind of love for Warmachine and the Iron Kingdoms. That, along with our expertise in creating games loved by many, makes us ideally placed to collaborate with Privateer Press in shaping the future of a hugely important franchise. There’s a profound sense of duty to nurture its growth and potential, and we take that responsibility seriously. We cannot wait for what’s to come for the players in this wonderful world.”

And from Matt Wilson, CCO and Founder of Privateer Press: “We couldn’t have asked for better custodians than Steamforged. Their track record, history with the games, and genuine excitement about the future make them the perfect fit to shepherd Warmachine and the Iron Kingdoms into the future, opening up new opportunities and growth channels for all Iron Kingdoms titles. We look forward to working with Steamforged in the years to come.”

As we bring these fantastic games into the Steamforged family, we’re committed to keeping you informed. Here’s what you need to know:

Join the Community

For the latest updates, sign up for the Steamforged newsletter, join our Discord (where there are now dedicated Iron Kingdoms channels), and follow us on social media.

Warmachine Facebook Group

We’re also taking on the Warmachine Facebook group, so you’ll continue to get updates there.

Website Orders

We’re transitioning the range to our website as we speak, and orders will reopen later this week. Right now, due to the scale of this transition, our main focus is Warmachine and the Iron Kingdoms RPG lines. More information on Formula P3 Paint, Warcaster, Riot Quest, and others will follow on Thursday (6th).

Existing Orders

Although there will be some delay while things are stabilised, any orders placed with Privateer Press will be honoured and dispatched, so no need to worry—everything will be delivered as promised.

Guild Ball & Godtear

Our plans for Guild Ball and Godtear remain unchanged. For Guild Ball, we’ll continue working with the GBCP, regularly posting updates, supporting community events with the recently announced prize support, and staying active in Discord. Models will still be available to order, and the starter set will remain free to download. For Godtear, we recently shared a hint at the new champion to join the line-up! Did you spot it?

It’s our hope that Warmachine joining the family will further strengthen and grow the SFG miniature gaming community, giving gamers from either side reason to jump in and give the other a try.

Gen Con Events

We’ll still be running all scheduled Gen Con events for Warmachine and Warcaster, so be sure to sign up if you haven’t already!

Next Update

We’ll be sharing our next key update on Thursday 6th June. We know this is a big change for some, and a little bit of a mystery to others. So, we want to take you on this journey with us, sharing behind-the-scenes insights as we go.

Kickstarter Launch

The Iron Kingdoms RPG Kickstarter for Strangelight Workshop will launch at the end of this month — more news to come!

In the meantime, we’re here to answer any questions you might have. Find us in the SFG Discord, where there are now dedicated channels. For updates, make sure you’re subscribed to the newsletter and following us on socials.

And if you’re new to the Iron Kingdoms, there’s no better time to start. It’s going to be an incredible ride.

PRIVATEER PRESS: THE NEXT PHASE

Privateer Press is nearly halfway through its 25th year. Not too bad for a company started on a whim by a couple of artists that just wanted to draw pictures of steam powered robots and wizards with guns.

In that time, Privateer has produced role playing games, miniatures games, card games, board games, magazines, books, paint and millions more models than we will ever be able to count. We’ve had our high points and our rough patches, and we have both the accolades and the scars that are garnered in the pursuit of doing great work. If there is one constant to Privateer, it is our commitment to following our creative muse in the hope that if we make something that we think is interesting and entertaining and inspiring, there are others that will think so as well, allowing us to continue to spend our time inventing new ways to roll dice while we avoid real jobs.

So far, so good.

But if there is a second constant that defines Privateer, it’s that we have always embraced change and adapted as our environment demanded so that we could carry on with our goals. Today we are unveiling a change that will redefine Privateer while at the same time reinforcing our ability to continue forward with the things we do best.

It is with great excitement that we are announcing that Steamforged Games has acquired the Iron Kingdoms/Warmachine library of properties, including Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika , Riot Quest , Bodgers , and all associated board game, card game and fiction titles, as well as the Formula P3 hobby products line. Going forward, Privateer will continue to partner with Steamforged Games to develop Warmachine, the Iron Kingdoms RPG, and future products based on the vast intellectual property library that has sprung from the Iron Kingdoms. Privateer will also continue to manufacture Warmachine models while working with Steamforged Games to expand the materials the products are offered in as well as increasing availability in markets where Warmachine is not widely accessible.

Steamforged Games possess resources, market reach, and infrastructure that will allow the momentum that the MKIV edition of Warmachine has achieved so far to be maximized in the years ahead. Our partnership with Steamforged will enable Privateer’s development team to stay focused on the continued innovation of Warmachine. Privateer has worked closely with Steamforged Games to carefully craft this opportunity that will ensure the ongoing success of Warmachine, new potential for other titles within the Iron Kingdoms library, and ultimately, achieve more than the sum of our parts. And we are very excited for this next phase in the ongoing evolution of Privateer Press.

We know that this news is likely very unexpected and raises more questions than a press release and a blog entry can hope to answer all at once. For the long-term evolution of Warmachine, the IKRPG, and the other titles in the Iron Kingdoms pantheon, there is much to look forward to from this partnership between Steamforged Games and Privateer Press.

As for the titles that are not under the Iron Kingdoms/Warmachine umbrella this new partnership provides an opportunity for Privateer to recalibrate and find a better road forward in the continued growth of those brands.

For the moment, we are eager to begin this next chapter in Privateer’s story and look forward to our partnership with Steamforged Games and all the possibilities the future holds for the Iron Kingdoms, Warmachine and more.
